Effect of cabergoline 

Cabergoline is a dopamine D2 receptor agonist. Medically, it is used mainly to treat hyperprolactinemia, i.e. elevated prolactin levels, and certain pituitary diseases. 

Does cabergoline have an anabolic effect? 

Cabergoline does not have a direct anabolic, i.e. muscle-building, effect. 

Mechanism of action 

Decreased prolactin levels 

Cabergoline stimulates dopamine receptors, which inhibits the release of prolactin in the pituitary gland. 

Indirect hormonal effects 

Normalized prolactin levels can improve libido and sexual function. With significantly elevated prolactin, testosterone can be indirectly negatively affected, so normalization can stabilize the body hormonally. 

Cabergoline does not build muscle. It only affects certain hormonal regulatory circuits. 

When do bodybuilders use cabergoline? 

In bodybuilding, it is sometimes mentioned: 

1. With elevated prolactin levels 

Some anabolic steroids can increase prolactin. The goal is to reduce side effects such as: 

• loss of libido, 

• erectile dysfunction, 

• prolactin-related gynecomastia. 

2. During or after certain steroid cycles 

It is used to control hormonal side effects. 

Combination with steroids – general information, not instructions 

Cabergoline is most often mentioned in practice with so-called “19-nor” steroids, such as nandrolone and trenbolone. The reason is that these substances can affect prolactin levels. However, this is not a recommendation or a guide to combining them. 

Risks and side effects 

• drop in blood pressure, 

• dizziness, 

• nausea, 

• psychological side effects, such as impulse control disorders, 

• changes in heart valves with long-term or high-dose use, 

• hormonal imbalance. 

Combining with anabolic steroids may further increase the risk of heart and blood vessel problems.
