Tamoxifen, sometimes incorrectly referred to as “Atmoxifen”, is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM). Medically, it is used primarily in the treatment of hormone-dependent breast cancer. In the bodybuilding community, it is mainly mentioned in connection with controlling estrogen effects. 

Does tamoxifen have an anabolic effect? 

Tamoxifen does not have a direct anabolic, i.e. muscle-building, effect. If there is a possible indirect effect, it is more related to influencing the hormonal axis.

In bodybuilding, tamoxifen is typically mentioned during a steroid cycle to prevent or address gynecomastia, especially with aromatizing agents. After the cycle, it is mentioned as part of the so-called PCT to support the restoration of natural testosterone production. 

What is it associated with in practice? 

It is most commonly used with aromatizing anabolic steroids, such as testosterone preparations, methandrostenolone/Dianabol, or nandrolone. The purpose is to reduce estrogenic side effects and support hormonal recovery after withdrawal.
